Ta-Nehisi Coates and Daniel Acuña relaunch "Black Panther" with a new #1 in May

With Marvel's fresh start initiative, there have been a slew of new #1s and creative team changes for their titles.  While all of the newly announced teams have been inspired choices and reasons for excitement, it seems that most everything is having a shakeup.  Even long-time Spider-Man scribe Dan Slott is on a new title, which was a shocking announcement in and of itself.

Well rest easy, true believers, because celebrated writer Ta-Nehisi Coates is still on Black Panther.  The title will get a new #1 this May, but Coates is here to stay with artist Daniel Acuña in tow.  So that means we'll get double the Coates, as he helms both Black Panther and Captain America.  Truly an embarrassment of riches.

Marvel have released the announcement, which is below, along with a variant cover from Artgerm featuring Shuri, Princess of Wakanda.  Considering the massive success of the movie and the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Shuri herself, having her front and center on a comic cover is a no-brainer.

Ta-Nehisi Coates and Daniel Acuña team up for new #1 launch

New York, NY—March 7, 2018—This May, Marvel is celebrating the launch of BLACK PANTHER #1 by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Daniel Acuña with an Artgerm variant cover featuring Wakanda’s Shuri.

“Black Panther #1 is a creative challenge for me. My first few books were more philosophical, and while that still rings true here, this is a fast-paced, high-octane story,” said Coates. “And with Daniel Acuña’s art, I think people are really going to feel the energy and intensity here. I wanted people to feel like this is a really fresh storyline, and I think we succeeded in that. It’s meaty, it’s different, and it’s perfect for new readers just coming to the world of T’Challa and Black Panther.’’
