Investigate government conspiracies, money launderers, and UFOs in Insight Comics' "Scoop, Vol. 1: Breaking News"

There's something appealing about mysteries being solved by young protagonists.  That's why characters like the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Encyclopedia Brown, and even Scooby-Doo are so popular: there's a certain satisfaction in seeing young detectives use spunk and ingenuity to stick it to stuffy, self-important adults.  On one level, it's probably a way to recapture the feelings of youth as we inevitably grow older, and on another... it's just really fun sticking it to the man.

Insight Comics have their own answer to this classic trope with their series Scoop, from writer Richard Hamilton and artist Joseph Cooper.  Starring teen sleuth Sophie Cooper, the original graphic novel sees its protagonist try to clear her father's name after he's falsely accused of being involved in a money laundering scheme.  Also, there are UFOs and alligator-men, so yeah, this sounds pretty great.

The graphic novel is due out next week, and Insight Comics have provided a first look at the book.  Check it out below.

Insight Comics Presents Scoop, Vol. 1: Breaking News
Written by Richard Hamilton Ÿ

Illustrated by Joseph Cooper

Color by Alba Cardona and Peter Pantazis

Paranormal mystery meets conspiracy thriller in this action-packed comic for young adults starring 14-year-old Sophie Cooper, a brilliant student intern turned sci-fi sleuth out to clear her family’s name.

Scoop, Vol. 1: Breaking News (Insight Comics / June 19, 2018 / $16.99) tells Sophie’s story as a red-headed, Cuban American high school freshman and the daughter of a loving father—who’s currently under house arrest for embezzlement and money laundering.

While her mother struggles to support the family, and her bratty younger brother Kit sits around tinkering with his “inventions,” Sophie has only one goal: clearing her father’s name.

When an internship opens up at the local news station, Sophie seizes the chance to do a little investigating of her own. Unfortunately, WMIA 7 isn’t exactly CNN. In between logging Betacam tapes and fetching coffee for the station’s washed-up reporting team, Sophie sifts through the “broken stories”: crank calls and dead-end tips reporting everything from UFOs to alligator-men. However, one name keeps popping up: Matheson Savings and Trust, the bank that accused Sophie’s father of money laundering.

Determined to follow her lead, Sophie sets out to investigate the bank, uncover a conspiracy, and clear her family’s name . . . just as soon as she finishes her homework.

Written by Richard Hamilton, contributing writer for DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon and Trollhunters franchises, with exceptional original art from acclaimed comic artist Joseph Cooper, this thrilling graphic novel demonstrates the importance of putting family first and the power of true investigative reporting. For Sophie, that means trusting her instincts and relentlessly following the truth no matter where it may lead her.

Scoop, Vol. 1: Breaking News will hit comic shops on June 19.
