New DC Comics and Hanna-Barbera crossover comics are smarter than the average bear

These intercompany crossover books from DC have been a real boon the past few years.  Last year saw several of DC’s most popular characters cross over with the Looney Tunes, which resulted in one of the best Batman stories of the past decade at least, and a new round  is due in a few months.

The Hanna-Barbera crossovers are no exception, with a batch that came out last year and another group that hit just a few months ago. The most recent lineup was particularly impressive, with hardly a bad story in the bunch, so with the announcement that even more crossovers are coming soon I’m certainly interested.  The fact that they include Deathstroke teaming up with Yogi Bear and Nightwing partnering with Magilla Gorilla?  Yeah, even more so.  Throw in a Secret Squirrel backup story that spans each title?  Just take my money now.

In Yellowstone Park, legends speak of a spirit bear referred to as “the Yogi,” which few if any have actually encountered. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the early 1970s, Green Lantern and Huckleberry Hound join forces to take a stand on the issues of that era. Returning from recent duty in Vietnam, veteran Marine John Stewart—now a member of the Green Lantern Corps—contemplates what, if anything, he should do about the issues tearing his country apart. Meanwhile, Huckleberry’s comments against the Vietnam war have left him a celebrity outcast, and a visit back home to Mississippi puts him face to face with the Civil Rights Movement. What can one man—and one hound—do?

When a famous Hollywood talent agent is found brutally murdered, suspicion and evidence seem to point to his most famous client, Oscar winning actor Magilla Gorilla. Donning his Nightwing costume and joining forces with the simian suspect, he’s got one night to prove that this monkey doesn’t belong in a cage.

In the salad bar, no one can hear you scream.

The new batch of DC/Hanna-Barbera crossovers will hit comic shops and digital retailers this October.
