Judge Dredd artist Ron Smith has died

Ron Smith, longtime and legendary artist for 2000 A.D., has died.

Smith is best known for his work with Judge Dredd, incorporating unique design elements into his portrayal of the character: rather than the trademark chunky and heavy look of Dredd’s helmet, gloves, and shoulder pads, Smith went for a sleeker look that was unlike anything from his contemporaries. For 2000 A.D., Smith also created Otto Sump, a character referred to as “Mega-City One’s ugliest man,” and provided numerous iconic covers for the publication.

He was 94.
