DC Comics celebrate 80 years of Batman

Last year was the Year of Superman, where we celebrated both the 80th anniversary of the character’s introduction and the 1000th issue of Action Comics. It was a great milestone for the industry and character, and a great time for fans in general.

This year we get to celebrate yet again, as Batman turns the big 8-0 and Detective Comics reaches its own thousandth issue. Besides that, it’s also the 30th anniversary of both Tim Burton’s landmark Batman film and the first appearance of Tim Drake in the comics pages, which is a pretty big deal in its own right.

Given Batman’s popularity, it’s not at all surprising that DC Comics are pulling out all the stops to celebrate the Year of the Batman. Detective Comics #1000 is fast approaching, and next week sees the wide release of the collection Detective Comics: 80 Years of Batman. It has a Slam Bradley story, so you know you need to pick it up.

Be sure to check the DC blog for more news and celebrations as they’re announced, and enjoy this gallery of hi-res images of Batman comics from across his history. There’s even a brand new mixed media piece from the legendary José Luis García-López and digital artist Admira Wijaya, so check it out below.
