Manga artist and "Lupin III" creator Monkey Punch has died

It’s been reported that Kazuhiko Katō, alias Monkey Punch, passed away on April 11 from pneumonia.

Katō is best known in the west as the creator of Lupin III, which followed the adventures of the grandson of Maurice Leblanc’s charming thief Arsène Lupin. The series was highly influential in Japan, with countless manga volumes published along with innumerable TV series, movies, video games, and more.

Under the pen name Monkey Punch, Katō had an illustrious career that spanned six decades. He wrote manga, worked in film and video games, and has participated in lecture series about the impact of manga throughout the world.

He was 81.
