Exclusive preview: "Batman & the Outsiders" #5

When Batman needs help solving a problem, but a high-profile team like the Justice League wouldn’t be ideal to lend a hand, he calls on the Outsiders. Originally formed in 1983 by creators Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo, the team consisted of Batman, Black Lightning, and Metamorpho, along with new characters Geo-Force, Halo, and Katana. The team has had multiple rosters over the years, and their focus has been on a more “covert ops” approach to heroism, as they intervened in international conflicts that got a bit too politically volatile for “mainstream” teams.

The latest iteration of the team launched earlier this year in the new series Batman & the Outsiders, from Bryan Hill, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, and Clayton Cowles. Batman’s reasons for forming the team are two-fold: for seasoned veterans Black Lightning and Katana to help in the training of Signal and Orphan, and also to keep tabs on Sofia Ramos, a young woman whose family has been targeted by a sinister organization. Since forming, the team has run afoul of no less than Ra’s al Ghul, as the Demon’s Head has dubbed her “Babylon” and manipulated her to serve him after the manifestation of her metahuman powers.

Now, the Outsiders need to save Sofia from Ra’s’ machinations, and DC Comics have provided us with an exclusive first look at the fifth issue of the series. Check it out below, along with a variant cover from legendary illustrator Kevin Nowlan.

The Outsiders must stop Ishmael if they hope to rescue Sofia and bring her back to Gotham City to meet with Batman. But vanquishing such a fearsome opponent will have dire consequences, especially for one member of the team...

Batman & the Outsiders #5 will hit comic shops and digital retailers on September 11.
